"It will remain free for Turkish worshippers," Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said in a televised address in Istanbul broadcast live by Haberturk television channel. The minister noted that the decision was made upon advice from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). No entrance fee has been in place since the mosque, located on the European side of Istanbul, was converted from a museum three years ago. Actress Hideko Takamine dies at 86

TOKYO, Japan - This September 1985 file photo shows actress Hideko Takamine, who died of lung cancer in a Tokyo hospital on Dec. 28, 2010, at the age of 86. Takamine was known for her appearances in numerous movies in the 1950s and 1960s.

Kakuei Tanaka

Born on May 4, 1918 in Niigata Prefecture and died on Dec. 16, 1993. Tanaka became Japan's 40th prime minister in July 1972 at 54, the youngest prime minister since the end of World War II. Tanaka established diplomatic relations with China in September of that year. In December 1974, Tanaka was forced to resign due to his involvement in money scandals. In July 1976, he was arrested on suspicion of accepting 500 million yen in bribes from Lockheed Corp. of the U.S. for his help in selling TriStar aircraft to Japan. In October 1983, he was sentenced to four years in prison by the Tokyo District Court. Tanaka's political influence declined after he suffered a stroke in February 1985 which left him partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. Photo was taken on Aug. 31, 1992.

Nikkei ends morning slightly above 12,500

That day, the Nikkei Stock Average ended the morning session off 178.10 points, or 1.4%, at 12,503.56. The benchmark index fell to as low as 12,428.48 at one point in the morning, down over 250 points. It was the first time since September 1985 for the index to fall below 12,500.

Girl plays violin for soul of dead father at JAL crash site

MAEBASHI, Japan - Fourteen-year-old Diana Yukawa, whose father died in the 1985 crash of a Japan Airlines jumbo jet on Mt. Osutaka in Gunma Prefecture, plays the violin for him at the crash site on Aug. 12, the 15th anniversary of the worst single-plane disaster in history. Yukawa, who was born to a British mother a month after the accident, left a CD of her violin recordings to be released in Japan in September at the site. All but four of the 524 people aboard JAL Flight 123 from Tokyo to Osaka were killed.
